Skin Wrinkles, An Unfortunate Side-Effect of Weight Loss

Don’t you think it is pretty unfair?  After all the hard work you exerted to lose all those weight and what happens next – you realize that weight loss is often accompanied by more wrinkles on your face, your laugh lines are more pronounced and existing wrinkles are a lot noticeable around the eyes.

Nobody tells you about these when you start a weight loss program.  Everyone is focused on how to lose all that fat that nobody mentions that you also lose subcutaneous fat on your face, along with everywhere else in your body.  Without the extra subcutaneous fat, wrinkles will surely appear.

So how does one prevent this unfortunate side effect of losing weight?  The foremost thing to remember during a weight loss program is that the skin won’t have the same texture and elasticity while losing the weight.   wrinkle prevention should be incorporated to your weight loss program as well.

Avoid drastic weight loss programs.  Rapid loss of supportive fat under the skin leads to loss of elasticity.  Lose a pound a week and you’ll keep your looks.

Stay hydrated.  Proper hydration of the skin is very important during weight loss as it provides nourishment to tissues and retains the skin’s suppleness and softness.  It also helps in maintaining the proper functioning of the body functions.  Thus, plenty of water should be taken daily and four to six liters a day is recommended.  You will get fewer wrinkles by keeping the fluid level in a healthy balance.

Eat a balanced and healthy diet.  As malnutrition is the leading cause of skin wrinkling, a well balanced and healthy diet is essential during weight loss program.  Include in your diet plenty of slow-release complex carbohydrates, a wide range of fresh fruits and vegetables as well as protein, which plays a vital role in the formation of collagen and elastin.

Exercise .  regular exercise helps in weight loss as well as enhances blood circulation.  Thus one should go for muscle toning.  Also incorporate facial exercises in your routine as they tone the facial muscle tissue underlying the skin and stimulate its elasticity.

Moisturize and Exfoliate.   Properly moisturize your skin.  Exfoliation will help the skin to appear smoother and fresher.  Do not use astringent as it makes the pores larger. Large pores make the skin more wrinkled.

Wash face with cold water and dry it in upward strokes.  If you are using hot showers, end your bath with a lukewarm water flow.  It will contract your pores and will lead to fewer wrinkles.

These are just a few remedies to keep the wrinkles at bay during and after weight loss.
